The family history in building can be traced as far back as the end of World War II.
After being a mechanic in the Australian Airforce during World War II, Thomas William Hollingsworth had an opportunity to achieve his aspiration to become a carpenter. He had always wanted to be a carpenter, but never had the opportunity prior to World War II.
At the end of the war, there were many rehabilitation courses on offer to encourage soldiers and others to enter a trade and Thomas (Tom) was enthusiastic about carpentry. At that time, there was a three month training course, and upon completion you were qualified to work as an apprentice under a boss for 3 years. Tom did this and after he served his apprenticeship he worked for Ernie Harris the builder. He only changed bosses two or three times before setting out on his own business - there was plenty of work to be had in Warrnambool during this period. The bosses at the time were provided money from the government to pay apprentices, but eventually funds became scarce until there was no imbursement.
Tom used to ride his bicycle to work, carting any tools in a sugar bag slung over his shoulder, also on his shoulder was two building saw stools – and was able to ride one handed owing to his much decorated bike riding career. He started out building settlement homes in Warrnambool. By this stage Tom had a growing family, and was building his own home for them on weekends and after work with some assistance from his brothers (one was a car salesman, the other a worker at the local woollen mill), it was a small trip; only a few doors up from where he lived at the time. Tom and his wife Carmel with their 11 children built up a strong business.
Tom eventually became a member of the Master Builders Association. After a few years, he took on his eldest son, Raymond (Ray) as an apprentice and taught him the skills of carpentry. Ray was about 15 or 16 years old at the time. He was a good worker, and enjoyed the trade. Shortly before the successful completion of Ray’s apprenticeship, Tom suffered a heart attack (in 1974), which after recovery, discouraged Tom from working full time in his trade. Ray continued on in his father’s footsteps and kept the business going. Tom did miscellaneous jobs (including helping Ray on site) and enjoyed retirement. However, while walking down the main street of Warrnambool, he collapsed from a fatal heart attack – aged a fit 82 (in 2006). He felt satisfied with his achievements to date. Tom directly set in motion a big business for the future, by teaching his son Raymond carpentry and joinery.
